So at work we just bought a shitload* of EMC equipment for our data storage. (*shitload = enough to give off 8 tons of heat when it’s all turned on)
What cools off 8 tons of heat? How about 20 tons of new air conditioning, on top of the umpteen tons that our data center already had. For some perspective, it only takes 2.5 tons of AC to keep our townhouse at a comfy 74′F during the scorching summer.
While this makes for one cool room,
the noise from the new AC
+ the noise from the existing AC
+ the noise from the 150+ servers and a gigantic AS/400
—————————–
way too much noise
… which means we now have to use hearing protection when we’re down there for more than just a minute or two.
So although it’s cool, it’s so not cool!
EMC equipment?
Michael, unable to use the internet for any purpose other than trying to amass the largest collection of SPAM, missed this definition at Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMC_Corporation
LOL. Jason spends many a night slurping thru the Wikipedia adding to his enormous bank of knowledge that he only uses during Trivial Pursuit games.
Our EMC setup = 1200 drives, .. works out to 60TB or something crazy like that. The AS/400 uses most of it, but we’re going to move our AIX Oracle boxes over there eventually.
And I thought the Network Appliance was cool. Maybe not so cool, but definately not as loud!!!
