Drip drip drip

Came home today to see yet another neighbor’s townhouse flooded out when their 10-year hot water heater that’s been in their attic for ~18 years “unexpectedly” burst.
How is it they never had the money to replace it proactively, but after it breaks (and costs the insurance company thousands of dollars to repair their house and replace their things), they can magically find a credit card with just enough on it to get a new one?
Ugh.
Do you think they have even ever look at it? When they bought the place did it come with a notice that the hot water heater is only good for x years?
Most people don’t proactively replace water heaters, they just wait for them to break/stop working.
I could understand the logic behind letting them break and then fixing them … if them breaking wasn’t likely to flood your entire house! Ugh.
Whoever decided that putting water heaters in the attic of two story townhouses must have been in kahoots with local drywall and flooring guys!!!
