I’m Goldilock’s Ghost, Bitch.

(with apologies to Dave Chappelle, wherever in the world his ass is hiding this week…)
So since I haven’t blogged about how MUCH I love the mini server the last 15 minutes, here’s a quick weekend recap:
First try was with Yellow Dog Linux — not bad, but hung on reboot with the external FireWire drive attached. Can’t have that.
Second try was with Fedora Core 4. Had no idea that they had a distro compiled just for PPC. w00t! FC4 doesn’t hang on reboot, but it feels slower than YDL and it runs the mac mini’s fan at full speed, 24×7, which is actually slightly audible.
After setting up NFS and Samba (to share files between the Macs and Windows boxes [roommates]), neither YDL or FC4 performed well. Both wanted to take over 1 hour to copy a 2GB file — too much time for this old man. I’m sure I could spend some time tuning them, but …
So, … going back to the kick-ass link that Carol (err, Tolovana) left in a comment a few days ago, I think I’m going to put Mac OS X (the OS that the mac originally comes with) back on the server. Since OS X is based on Unix, it looks like a piece of cake to get a web and email server up and running. Double+plus, OS X is already tuned to share files quickly between Macs and Windows boxes. Yay, now I get to learn the ins and outs of BSD. Time to update the resume. J/K
Oh, on a non-technical note for Aaron, the little back scrubby thing Jason got at Bath and Body Works is pretty damn cool. Now if I get hit by a car, I won’t have to worry about them finding dirt on that one part of my back I could just never seem to reach.
Wow, that was a long post of blah blah blah. Thanks for the mention and simple english at the end though!
