Homo with HMO

EDIT: if you’re looking for information on adding HMO to your DTiVo,
Had to bail on the beach plans with Joe today — woke up with a tummy ache from hell. Although I can’t conclusively prove it, I think the 1AM trip to Wendy’s last night might have had something to do with it.
Spent from 1PM until 3AM (minus 2 hours when Brad C. came over to hang out) being a complete geek — hacking our DTiVo’s (special TiVo’s that only work with DirecTV service). Compared to regular TiVo’s, DTiVo’s are sweet: 1/2 the cost, have an extra tuner (so it can record TWO shows at once), recordings look much better, blah blah blah. HOWEVER, DTiVo’s are controlled by the poofheads from DirecTV who don’t EVER seem to add the cool features that regular TiVos get, like the Home Media Option (HMO).
HMO = your TiVo’s connecting to your computer so they can play your MP3s or show your pictures. HMO also lets you watch a recording made on one TiVo on another DTiVo, which is going to be a handy feature now that we’ve got 3 folks in the house.
Turns out that the cool features of regular TiVo’s are in DTiVo’s — just disabled. Some glorious being (that I will praise heavily via his PayPal account) figured out to how enable these features, plus add a whole bunch of other hacks (like a webserver that lets you use a browser to schedule recordings, a ftp server, a telnet server, etc). Anywho, it works.
I could write oodles more, but I need to get into bed. We’ve got an IKEA/Red Robin run planned for tomorrow (today), and Rico’s not known for giving me any sleep ’slack’ for nights I stay up geeking out. (Although I strongly think he’ll like the MP3 and pictures on the TiVo). ![]()
